Cultural Context, Approach, and Reflection
Cultural Context and Approach
This resource presents Haitian culture through a positive and respectful lens, focusing on creativity, community and cultural richness.
Teachers are encouraged to:
- Centre student curiosity and discussion
- Avoid excessive use of deficit-based narratives (ie. narratives of poverty/third-world country, narratives relating to devastation or any discriminatory narrative that may be perceived as disempowering or disrespectful to the people and nation of Haiti)
- highlight the diversity of Caribbean musical traditions
Final Reflection
- How can music communicate meaning without words or even when we don’t understand the language?
- What role does voice play in expressing emotion and identity?
- How does communal singing reflect shared experience?
